A Conversation with ART TOLLIVER:
The Man of the Moment Shares His Thoughts With Our Music Editor
Kelton Farnley
It's getting to the stage now where all we need see is a hat and
a scarf hanging on a stand and we immediately think of Art Tolliver!
For each time he steps onto the stage, the same scene re-enacts
itself. First his hat sails across the stage and onto the rack,
then his scarf is draped casually after. He sips a cocktail, smiles
to the audience, gestures to the leader of the orchestra... and
then he starts to sing, and the magic begins! It is not only Art
Tolliver's manly good-looks and his dashing ways which have
endeared him to the public, though: with almost as many men in his
audience as ladies, it is obvious that the golden tones of his mellifluous
voice are at the heart of his appeal.
This paragon of popular music struck gold with his last recording,
The Art Of Romance, from which the superb song "Teardrop
Kisses" was taken as a single, and it seems that his next album
- entitled Art on Exhibit and to be released in early
Summer - will be a new triumph for Art. In the plush visitors' lounge
of Executive Sound Studios, where such luminaries as Mahalia
Mayes and Chico Carrera's Fantastic Dance Orchestra have
recorded, I met up with Art himself, who took a break from his hectic
schedule to play me the forthcoming single from Art On Exhibit
- an up-tempo number entitled "Just For My Baby".
"You know by now, Kelton, how deeply I feel about the music I make,"
Art commented as he prepared to spin the brand new disc. "We know
how much the audience out there appreciated The Art of Romance,
but it's easy to be outpaced in the fast-moving world of music -
you can't stand still for a second! That's why we're making a very
different album this time. The audience of today keeps an artist
on his toes, and that's why I've been running with the fast set
- bringing in band-leader Marshall Nelson, one of the shapers
of today's popular styles, to orchestrate the songs. Art On
Exhibit is a very special album for me, and while I love
those romantic songs, this time there are more songs you can dance
to." Art smiled as he added, "A young fellow likes to cut loose
once in a while!"
"Just For My Baby", which will be available for purchase
this weekend, is actually a love song, but certainly a song one
can dance to - in fact, with the superb timing of Mr Nelson's
orchestra and a sunshine-filled, happy-go-lucky vocal from Art,
it is almost impossible not to swing to this snappy number! This
zinger of a single is guaranteed to be a big hit, and also to increase
the anticipation already felt for that special new album which is
just around the corner.
A Star for the Next Generation?
All at Stage & Screen offer our heartfelt congratulations
to celebrated pop orchestra leader Marshall Nelson, and the
singing sensation formerly known as Angelique Wye. The celebrity
couple were married a year ago following a whirlwind romance, and
last week the lovely Angelique gave birth to their first child.
They have decided to name their son Melody, and close friends of
the couple report that the youngster has inherited both his mother's
delicate looks and the rude health of his father. Little Nelson
is descended from show-business stock - in addition to his parents'
renown, his paternal grandmother was the late, great diva Mahalia
Mayes, while his mother is a direct descendant of Minerva's
first family of variety, the Gombolinis. Let us hope that
young Melody Nelson will grow up to join this long line of
Minervan stars!
An Advance Warning to Music Fans!
Stage & Screen regrets to reveal that, due to
the stringent economic requirements regulating an enclosed society
such as our own, the Office of Communications has announced
a rise in the price of musical recordings, formerly priced at 8MCs.
From Tuesday week, the price will be set at 10 MCs.

THE ART OF ROMANCE REVISITED!
Society Editor Edith Smoote On Art Tolliver And Today's Top Names
In Glamour!
Gone are the days when Art Tolliver was seen at dinner with
a model, out dancing with an actress and taking supper with a singer
all in the same evening, and speculation is growing that the suave,
sophisticated singing star may have marriage on his mind! Of late,
adorable Art has been spotted spending a lot of time in the company
of just a few ladies. Art declines to comment on which might be
that special lady of whom he so often sings, claiming all as friends
only - perhaps out of loyalty to his female fans, whose devotion
to their idol is a phenomenon unto itself. Yet which of these lovely
ladies might also be the lucky lady?
Mina Exprima: The alluring singer's sultry tones and dark
beauty have worked wonders in the past, and insiders claim that
her split with Chico Carrera left the dance-band wizard heartbroken.
She and Art are often seen gracing the dancefloor of the Central
Club and the intimate booths at nearby Carmen's. Could
this be love?
Yasuko Yoshihara: Rumour has it this delicate beauty is
depressed after splitting from millionaire businessman Clark
Fontley, but the reigning queen of high fashion was smiling
and talkative when she and Art dined at The Tableau earlier
this week. Also, both have recently spent weekends visiting family
- perhaps with something to discuss?
Ivy Tanner: The darling of the screen has worked her way
from the poverty of East 23 into the hearts of Minerva's viewers.
She and Art were together at the premiere of her new serial Daughter
of the Cabaret, where they smilingly received celebrity
guests. They have much in common, both rising from humble beginnings
into the limelight.
Eva Reilly: This fresh-faced actress is a powerful stage
presence, and perhaps a place in Art Tolliver's heart, for
they not only attended the glittering opening of Seasonal City
last week, but they were seen together at both the Moose Club
and Carmen's. Perhaps Art is helping her forget her sorrows
after the secret marriage of Richard Rockford?
La Bella Exprima in the Lap of Luxury!
Mina Exprima, one of the great divas of the modern age,
has announced a week-long concert engagement at the luxuriously
appointed Rosewood Lounge in the Bazaar District. Now backed
by Timmy Luncheon's Clouds of Delight, La Bella Exprima
will perform pieces including recent hits "Lost in Love"
and "Into My Arms", and classics such as "Foolish, Faithless
Man". She appears at 10pm, on the evening of the 35th to the
41st of Autumn. Hurry and contact the Rosewood Lounge Box
Office, for demand is sure to be high.
An Off-Stage Speculation!
Coming hot on the heels of marital betrayal drama Jumping
to Conclusions, Christine Flyte's new play Fall
from Grace has had the Seahorse Theatre sold out
for two weeks now. With the play displaying such money-making magic,
perhaps there is truth in the rumours that the protagonist is based
on real-life tycoon Clark Fontley - unlucky in love, yet
a resounding fiscal success! Whatever the truth, Fall from
Grace on the stage is destined to run and run!
